Local Restaurants & Places to Eat around Cheltenham

Bhoomi

52 Suffolk Rd, Cheltenham GL50 2AQ, UK – 01242 222010

Fantastic place. Staff are lovely. We went for my birthday and did the tasting menu. We were able to do one meat and one vegetarian menu and the wine pairing. Couldn't fault the food, service or drinks. Very tasty, flavoursome and an amazing experience.

Excellent high end Indian food. Portions a little on the small side, but not stingy. Consider giving the poppadoms a miss as a) they are expensive and b) in an attempt to give them a high end look, the pickles are too small. The beef and aubergine starter is lovely. They serve draft Kingfisher at a reasonable price. Service is good and the surroundings well designed.

Le Champignon Sauvage

24-28 Suffolk Rd, Cheltenham GL50 2AQ, UK – 01242 573449

Just marvellous from the staff greeting and serving on arrival to the cheeseboard and petit fours at the end. Imaginative, beautifully presented flavour combinations. Special mention to the Thai green curry ice cream and the squid ink sauce. Simply gorgeous!

The food was very good but I would have never guessed this is a 2 star Michelin restaurant and it certainly was miles away from my previous experience at 1 star Michelin restaurants. This said, we did take advantage of the extremely good value for money lunch menu and had a fantastic time. Good food but customer service very poor for this level of restaurant. I really struggled to make a reservation and was initially told the restaurant was fully booked so was very surprised to see more than half the tables empty on arrival. Staff are very friendly but lack customers service training. Nothing to keep our white wine cool on a hot day and I was poured a full glass of wine to taste, the wine, very strange. The decor feels old and tired and although I appreciated the laid back atmosphere the place looks like a pub from outside, extremely simple inside and the toilets look like you got lost in an Ibis hotel. No nice touches like Aessop soap, instead cheap soap coming out of a plastic refill and tic tac served in a shot glass. I highly recommend coming here to take advantage of the Mon-Fri lunch menu but quite frankly not sure why this restaurant has made Michelin star (even one). Had I come on a weekend at full price I would have been disappointed and if I had never been to a Michelin Star restaurant this experience would have contributed very little for me to seek out further Michelin rated restaurant. I revisited the restaurant recently again. This time I wasn't so focused on the fact it's a Michelin star restaurant. I just focused on the food which was top notch and had a lovely time. The atmosphere is definitely a little odd. Very quiet as never fully booked and no music but food won't let this place down so if you don't judge them on their Michelin stars you won't be let down. You will like this restaurant if you prefer more laid back, not snobbish service and atmosphere and if you don't compare to other Michelin star restaurants you may have been to OR if you haven't decided to come here for your first Michelin star experience and if you don't mind there is no music in background.

L'Artisan French Restaurant

30 Clarence St, Cheltenham GL50 3NX, UK – 01242 571257

Beautiful food aside what a lovely owner. It speaks volumes when one of the take away memories was the quality of service and social interactions. This is a proper French restaurant. All the staff members mother tongue is French. A healthy number of the clientele were French too, which speaks volumes for the quality of the adopted cuisine. The food was excellent, an amuse bouche was followed by seasonal mussels and one of prettiest, and delicate desserts I’ve had the pleasure of eating. An enjoyable French experience in Cheltenham. Why head to France? Make sure you book well in advance.

A cracking refined posh nosh. Proper service, with that level of waiting usually reserved for big cities or the mainland continent. Manages to stay relaxed and unpretentious but still felt thoroughly spoilt. Great wine selection with some unpressured guidance from the somelier/waiter. Spot on choice. Can't wait to go back, but need a good enough reason. Is celebrating a weekday good enough?
